BCS Shakeup Coming

The Oklahoma Sooners journey at the top of the BCS will be brief. The Missouri Tigers defeated them on Saturday night. The yellow-clad fans of Missouri stormed the field. Pieces of the Gold post were hauled to a local tavern after the number 18 Tigers 36-27 defeat of the number 1 Sooners.
Gary Pinkel coach of the tigers said it was a long time coming. He was 0-6 against the Sooners. “It’s huge, it’s gigantic he said.
71,004 fans watched Jerrell Jackson spin free from a group of Sooners on a 38-yard td reception for the go-ahead score.
Oklahoma committed three costly turnovers; they only had five in their first 6 games. Two of the turnovers led to 10 points. And another stopped a deep drive into Tiger territory.
Bob Stoops said “Against a team like this in a an environment like this, it’s amazing that we even had a chance in the fourth quarter, I wish we would have played better and taken care of the football”
Oklahoma’s DeMarco Murray was held to a season-low 49 yards on 12 carries. An 86-yard touchdown return by Gahn McGaffie on the opening kickoff set the tone for the Tigers who ended a seven game losing streak against Oklahoma dating back to 1998. They beat the Sooners for only the second time in the last 21 meetings.
Missouri is now 7-0 for the first time in quite a while.
They do not need to dwell on this one very long either because nest week they travel to Lincoln Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers who just defeated another undefeated team of Oklahoma State. Oklahoma was the 3rd number one in a row to tumble following Alabama and Ohio State. The probable front runner next week of Oregon has to play USC who cannot go to a bowl this year and is averaging over 500 yards per game with their potent offense.

What a year in the South Eastern Conference!

All summer long, it looked like Alabama would be the team to beat, but who knew that it would be the two Tigers that were the top dogs. That’s right Auburn and LSU. The SEC has always had its two powerhouse teams, but this year all has changed. The SEC West has 5 out of the 6 teams ranked in the Top 25, while the East is only boasting in one with South Carolina.
It’s still a guess who will end up in Atlanta on December 4th to play for the SEC championship. With Auburn, Alabama, and LSU still having to play each other this year, things are still bound to get shaken up. Auburn and LSU face on Oct 23, which will give the West a little room. Then LSU and Alabama face off on Nov.6, before Bama faces Auburn on Nov 26. That’s just in the West. The Eastern Division is still anyone’s game through midseason.
It is just a mess in the East, with Florida losing three straight conference games; they could still end up in Atlanta playing for a conference championship. If they can beat Georgia in Jacksonville on Oct. 30, Vanderbilt on the road on Nov. 6 and South Carolina at home on Nov. 13. There has not been a three-loss champion represent the division in Atlanta since divisional play started in 1992.
Who knows where the conference will stand this year, but one thing for sure is if the SEC wants to send a team to the BCS National Championship for a 5th straight year, a hard road lies ahead. Auburn is sitting at No. 4 in the first BCS standings, but LSU isn’t far behind at No. 6. Alabama is the highest one-loss team nationally at No. 8.
The SEC is still going to have some work cut out for them if both Oklahoma and Oregon remain undefeated. The past does show that if an SEC team goes unbeaten through the regular season, the voters have rewarded them. Florida jumped up to the top two spots in 2008 and in 2006 after being 10th and 6th in the first BCS Standings.
The Auburn Tigers look like they are the team to beat from this point forward. Cam Newton is a machine and has been racking up the yards and the touchdowns on every team they have faced so far. If LSU or Alabama have a say in it, they will have to shut down Newton.
From record setting scores, to major upsets, the SEC has been full of a ton of surprises. The crazy thing is we are only half way through the season. There is no telling what is in store for college football fans as we embark on the second half of the year. Will the SEC send a team to the BCS National Championship game, or will a new conference take over as this year’s best? Only time will tell, but one thing for certain is that it will be entertaining.

Big 12 Week 7 Wrap

In the Big 12 this week we had some great games. Kansas State and Bill Snyder welcomed Turner Gill into the conference with a Kansas welcome party by soundly whipping them 59-7. If Gill is going to hang around he is going to have to get some consistency within his program.
Missouri and Gary Pinkel hung a L on Coach Mike Sherman and the A&M Aggies 30-9. Tommy Tubberville after coming over from the SEC had his hands full as the grown men of Oklahoma State defeated Texas Tech 34-17. Baylor beat Colorado 31-25. Oklahoma romped and stomped on Iowa State 52-0 and last but not least. Texas said goodbye to Bo Pallini in a proper Big 12 fashion by defeating the so called #5 Nebraska Cornhuskers 20-13
With Missouri leading the northern Big12 at 6-0 followed by Kansas State and Nebraska and Oklahoma and Oklahoma State both undefeated in the Southern division, the Big 12 is going to have a really exciting 2nd half of this season.
