How to Find the Right Sport for You

While there is no doubt that playing a sport is an essential part of staying healthy and, for youngsters in particular, for character building, choosing the sport that is right for you is no easy task. The fact is that there are so many sports out there that if you have never played one before, the choice can be confusing. Fortunately, there are a few factors to consider which may be of help.

First off, sport is meant to fun. Indeed, having fun is perhaps the most important aspect of sport participation. With this in mind, your first consideration should be which sport you think you will enjoy the most. If you have a favourite sport but are worried that you may be no good at it and will not even make the team, put these worries aside, go for it and, even if you struggle to begin with, if you do enjoy the sport you are sure to improve with time and practice. After all, if after some time you don`t get the hang of things then you can always try something else instead.

Another important factor is taking your body shape into account. Indeed, an increasing number of people insist that our specific body shape should ultimately determine which sport we opt for. For example, if you are very tall the obvious choice would be to go for something like basketball. Your height here will prove a huge advantage before you have even begun. And after all, if you are particularly tall you are never going to be a jockey.

In similar vein, lean or very slim people tend to make great long distance runners. You will no doubt have noticed during the Olympics that all the successful runners at long distance level — especially in the marathon — have virtually zero body fat. If you are of this body type then long distance running may be the option for you.

How much time you are willing, or able, to dedicate to your chosen sport may also be a factor. Quite simply, while every sport requires a certain amount of practice and dedication, if you want to be the best some sports require far more dedication than others. If you are a particularly busy person and you feel that sport is never going to be your number one priority then opting for a sport that can fit into your busy schedule will be a wise move.

Once you have made an initial decision and have had a few try outs, then you should reassess the situation. Assess how you feel after playing your chosen sport, both physically and emotionally. Above all else, a sport should leave you feeling relaxed and energised. If it has the opposite effect, then you should be considering another option.

Finally, you will have to decide whether you are a team player or somewhat more individualistic. There is no point passing rugby balls around all day with a bunch of teammates if you feel you would prefer to follow your own rules. In this case opt for something like mountain biking or cross country running instead.

Pool for Beginners

While pool can be one of the most enjoyable sports on offer, not everyone finds they are any good at it. Indeed, much like most sports, you will need to have particular skills if you are going to compete with the best. To get you started here are a few basic tips on how to get up to speed in pool.

The first thing you need to consider is your stance. This is essentially how you hold yourself when at the table. However, this will be different depending on whether you are right handed or left handed. For left handers, your left leg should be moved close to the table. Of course, the opposite is the case for right handers.

Your feet should be set just either side of your hips and your knees should be slightly bent. Your feet will of course be positioned with one in front of the other, so keeping your legs apart will be essential in ensuring you do not wobble. If your body does sway a little, then your cue is likely to sway as well. In this instance you need to stop and readjust your position until swaying no longer occurs.

The next point you will need to work on will be your aim. In fact, there are a whole number of ways to go about this and you will need to find the one that works best for you. Many people however, tend to prefer what is known as the `Ghost ball technique`. This involves looking through the line from the middle of the object ball to the centre of the pocket in which you wish to fire the ball.

Next, you need to place the ghost ball (i.e. imaginary) at the point where the real cue ball should hit the object ball so as it goes into the pocket. With time your memory will take over and you will no longer need to consciously visualize your imaginary ghost ball.

The next steps involve gaining control of your cue ball both in terms of direction and speed. You should begin by taking note how the cue ball travels once you have hit it. Fortunately, this simply requires concentrated practice that involves paying attention to aspects such as the `drawback` the `follow through` and speed control.

In fact, most masters will tell you that once you have gained knowledge of the basic techniques, everything ultimately comes down to controlling the speed of the balls. Unfortunately, there are many factors involved in speed that are beyond your control but there are some ways in which you can control the speed to a certain extent.

The angle at which you hit the object ball with the cue ball, for example, will have a huge effect. Hit the object ball full on and the cue ball will transfer all its energy to it, leaving little left for itself to travel. The greater the angle in fact, the longer the distance the cue ball will tend to travel — however hard you hit it.

And never forget the most simple fact — your choice of cue will be vital. Make a visit to a pool tables shop to try some out before buying the best one for you.

Best Miss State Flip Flops I Have Ever Worn

Monty the Bulldog

He tried to eat my husband's Miss State leather flip flops.

Yesterday I blew out my cheap flip-flops, what a bummer. Well, they weren’t really cheap flip flops, they were some rubber Nike flip flops I had ordered online and found on sale. I had worn them for 4 months. The mistake I had made was wearing them to do yard work, wash cars etc. I had really put them to the test. Usually I can get a season out of a pair of flip flops and that is it.

My DH (dear husband) has a pair of leather flip flops that he has been wearing for over 2 years now and recommended I get a pair like his. This was his second pair and unfortunately the first pair was destroyed by our bulldog, Monty, aka Monster. Monster used his leather flip flops as a chew toy when he was left unattended in our home office.

Since we offer Enmon Leather flip flops at our business, it was easy to go to the warehouse and get another pair. His second pair looks as good as the first day he got them and he keeps them out of the Monster’s reach. We are both Mississippi State alumni and mostly wear collegiate licensed stuff to support our alma mater daily. The thing about the Enmon leather flip flops is the quilted foot-bed. There are no words to describe the comfort they provide to your feet. They feel great all day long. As hot as it gets in Mississippi in the summer, it is really crazy to wear anything but flip flops and shorts.

When football season starts in the fall, it is still hot. Even if you have to do a lot of walking to get to the stadium on game day, these shoes are still comfortable. When I say, you can wear them everywhere, there is one exception. I would not recommend you wear them to the beach or places where you may get the leather upper wet. If you are continually getting the leather part wet, don’t expect them to last as long as they normally would.

Enmon makes a flip flop for ladies that have the collegiate licensed emblem. They are brown leather with a pink trim. Mine has the Flying M logo for Mississippi State. They look good with jeans, shorts and even casual sundresses. These are the ones my DH (dear husband) got for me. I am no longer bummed about blowing out my old flip flops. As a matter of fact, I am quite comfortable about it.

Here is a picture of our notorious Monster and be sure to keep your new flip flops away from your dawg. I highly recommend you grab a pair for yourself, click here to shop for NCAA MSU flip flops.

Michigan bedspread from SportsFanTreasures.com
These days, many Universities are requiring Freshmen to live in the dorm. I lived in the dorm for a short time during college. There is not a lot of space and you usually have to share that space with a room mate. Thinking smart and taking items that are multi functional will make the best use of a small space.

The Collegiate blanket bedspread is one of those gifts that fits into this category. This blanket is large enough to use as a bedspread for a twin-sized bed and also large enough to keep 2 warm on a cold game day.

Here are some of the blanket bedspreads we have just added recently to the Sports Fan Treasures. The best part is: they are only $38.95 for a limited time. It is like getting a bedspread and a blanket for only $38.95. The 2 in 1 graduation gift.

High School Baseball in America

What is Baseball America?

Click edit above to add content to this empty capsule.

High School Baseball in America is arguably the most popular high school sport in the United States. With the advent of the internet, it has become easier for fans and scouts to keep track of high school teams across the nation. In addition to being very popular, it is currently the only major American sport that allows players to be drafted straight from high school. This fact gives the players added incentive to perform at high levels because of the chance they are being scouted by a Major League team. The popularity of high school baseball has especially boomed because Baseball America, which is a publication that focuses a lot of man power on high school baseball. This allows many Major League scouts to see what players are doing well and who should be seen in person for further evaluation.

Baseball America was founded in 1981 with the main purpose of the publication being to help evaluate young talent in high school and bring this information to minor and major league clubs across the country. Baseball America almost single handily brought high school baseball into the limelight and many high school players can thank the publication for them being scouted. Baseball America not only highlights players in high profile areas but also in more rural areas where a lot of high school players do not get the attention that they deserve.

Baseball America is known for its ability to scout up and coming baseball players quite accurately and have over 17,000 players across the country in their database as of May 2009, with the majority of these players having full scouting reports in addition to their basic statistics and information. Many major league scouts will only use Baseball America in order to evaluate talent before seeing the player in person because of the reliability that Baseball America has shown over the years in finding the next big thing in the baseball world. Since 1981, Baseball America has awarded a player of the year for high school and every player on this prestigious list has made it to the Major Leagues. The list of players includes but is not limited to Dwight Gooden, Jose Canseco, Frank Thomas, Manny Ramirez, Derek Jeter, and Josh Beckett. It seems than whenever Baseball America touts a new hot prospect they are rarely if ever wrong on evaluating their potential.

Baseball America while great at evaluating talent is also great at evaluating teams and ranks teams across the country into a Top 25 poll every week during the season. This gives teams without the next breakout star to have a sense of team pride when they are considered in the top echelon of teams across the country. This also allows Major League and Minor League scouts to check out these teams during high profile games and see if any player that went unnoticed previously is someone that could help improve a team at the next level.

Baseball America is a very integral part in the success of High School baseball in America and without their hard work and dedication to bringing information on prospects to the correct people, the high school baseball world as we know it might not be the same today.

How has Baseball Equipment Changed

Baseball & Baseball Equipment Over Time

Baseball has changed so much since it was first invented. American baseball was formed from cricket, which is a British game. The British game was called “rounders”. This game was a favorite pastime in the 1700s. Alexander Joy Cartwright is credited with the development of baseball. He came up with a baseball field in which we use a similar one today. Of course, things have been changed since then. He founded the baseball field in 1845. Also, he came up with some rules of the game. Baseball was a sport that was a leisure activity for rich white males. Baseball became more popular after the Civil War. Soldiers came back from fighting and introduced the sport of baseball into their cities where people would watch and then play. It didn’t take very long for people to catch on to the rules. People became better and better at playing the sport after being involved in many games
As Baseball Evolved, So Did The Equipment

Click edit above to add content to this empty capsule.

Baseball began to be noticed by the National Association. The Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first pro team in 1869. Other teams developed and rivaled after the Red Stockings because they were the first team. The first World Series featured the National and American League teams playing each other. They didn’t have all the equipment as we do today. Baseball wasn’t as fair as it is today. Blacks couldn’t play until 1947. That’s when Jackie Robinson became a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers and broke the color barrier. Baseball evolving and equipment evolving go hand in hand.
What Was The First Baseball Made Of

Click edit above to add content to this empty capsule.

The first baseball was made of horsehide with a rubber core. The ball was in size somewhere between a golf ball and a softball. The Spalding Sporting Goods Company was given the rights to make the first league ball which weighed five ounces. The ball is not the same ball we use today. That ball produced few home runs and also low scores. The Reach Sporting Goods Company came up with a ball that was much livelier. It contained a cork in the center of the ball that allowed a hit ball to travel much further. As expected, more runs were scored and pitchers tried out new pitches. Now, cowhide is used instead of horsehide because of economical reasons.
Baseball Bats Have Changed

There are many baseball bats

nowadays. They originally came in different shapes and sizes too but they are not up to par as the ones that are made now. Baseball players ended up using rounded barrel bats after they experimented with different kinds. Baseball bats had to have 2.5 inches in their diameter but could be of any length. This was in 1859. A decade later, the bats could be a max of 42 inches long at the most. This is currently the max today.

The Early Catcher’s Glove Did Not Have Full Fingers

The catcher often used leather work gloves that didn’t have full fingers to catch balls. They added padding to minimize and avoid injuries. The catcher was the first person on the field to wear a glove. This makes sense because of the wear and tear they would endure without one.

Technology Has Made Baseball Equipment Better

Equipment has evolved over time. Ideas were taken and made into top-notch equipment that is available today. Even now, the popular equipment has added technology to make it even better.
