Detroit Redwings and the History of their Players

There is no arguing that the Detroit Redwings are considered America’s team when it comes to hockey, this means as a result that there is by default logic that will enforce this point. The proof that this is the team that America rallies behind, is that there have been a long list of players and coaches that have all made a name for themselves as a Redwing. There is not a single member of this team that has not been a standout player in the NHL. Many of these players have proven to the general public that they are worthy of the devotion that the Detroit faithful have provided to them. When you sit down to discuss the great players for the Redwings many times a person will have a hard time picking just one player that is considered to be the best. While the debate as to who is considered to be the best Redwing rage on for years, there are a select handful of players that every person can agree on when it comes to great Detroit players

Gordie Howe whenever people hear this name, they are taken back to a time when the great players of that time were making a name for themselves in hockey. These players at the time had no way of knowing but they they would go on to be some of the greatest players that played the game. Gordie Howe is considered to be one of these players that has made an impression upon the entire hockey community. There are very few players that can make a case as to why Gordie Howe does not deserve the award for the best Detroit player of all time. There have been great players, but Howe is considered to be one of the greatest that ever played the game at all.

In addition to the great players that have played the game, there are also the coaches for Detroit that has led the team to several championships including a series of Stanley Cup victories. These players were guided by such great coaches as Scotty Bowman. Bowman is considered to be one of the best coaches that has coached the team, there have been a large number of people that have said that the Scotty Bowman era was one of the best that the team has had in quite some time. There has not been a coach for the Redwings that has had more success than has Scotty Bowman. Just one look at his record and it will be clear as the amount of success that he had when he was leading the team. This also led to him having a place in the Hall of Fame as being one of the best coaches that ever coached the game.

No matter what you opinion of the team is, or if you are even a hockey fan, there is little doubt that the Detroit Redwings will go down in the history books as being one of the best hockey teams that ever played the game. This is why they have been adopted as being the Unofficial team for the country. Many people are die hard fans and never have even been to Detroit, then there are the people that live in the city, these people are proud of their team and bleed red and white for their Redwings.

Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres have to be feeling good about their performance halfway into their 14-day road trip. Even after a heartbreaking loss in Anaheim, in which they came back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game and make it close. The Sabres are 2-1-1 on their first four games of the trip. They hold a commanding lead over the Ottawa Senators in the Northeast division of the Eastern Conference with a record of 30-12-6 and a total of 66 points. The Sabres narrowly missed the playoffs the last two seasons, but with a 10-point lead atop the Northeast Division, they are in excellent position to end that drought.

Their success can be attributed to players such as Jason Pominville, Tim Connolly, and Ryan Miller. Jason Pominville, whose consistency and endurance was seen as he played in his 300th game in a row. Pominville reached the mark Thursday night when he took the ice against the Los Angeles Kings in the Staples Center. He has dressed for every game the Sabres have played since April 8, 2006, a stretch of 3½ seasons.

As for Connolly, he has been red hot lately, extending his point streak to 13 games. During that 13 game stretch, Connolly has 6 goals and 15 assists for 21 points, and is a 15. Not only has Connolly hit a career benchmark with a 13-game point streak, Tuesday night also marked 48 games on the season for the center, tying the most he’s ever played in a single season.

Ryan Miller, has won 27 games and has a save percentage of .936, has been incredible this season. Miller is on the U.S. Olympic Team and is headed for Vancouver, Canada for the Winter Olympics. They have been especially sharp lately, going 7-0-3 since Christmas and 17-4-4 since Thanksgiving with Miller leading the way. The likely starter for the United States at the Vancouver Olympics ranks second in the NHL with a career-best 2.01 goals-against average.

Some credit for the success of the Sabres has to go to their General Manager, Darcy Regier, who is in his 13th year as GM of the Sabres. Under his leadership, the Sabres have become one of the most competitive and exciting young teams in professional hockey today. Regier and head coach Lindy Ruff are currently the longest GM/Coach combination in pro sports. Together they have had more success than any pair in Sabres franchise history.

t’s unusual for GM’s, team presidents, and owners to get a lot of positive attention when things go well. It’s the nature of the sports talk universe. Players get the credit for winning and management gets the blame for losing. Carefully and methodically, Regier has put together a pretty darned good hockey team that is battling for the Eastern Conference lead and has folks wondering how far into May or June this season could last.

Sabres fans are hoping for a Stanley Cup appearance, as the last year that the team reached the Stanley Cup Finals was in 1999. This year the team is in good position to be a force to be reckoned with in the post-season.

Players That Went Wild for the Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild hockey team is one that been around for the last ten seasons. Whilst there’s not a Stanley Cup in their trophy case, you’ve to give the team credit for at the very least attempting to get the job performed. Early Hockey Traditions Of The Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks have a rich history dating back to the early 1900′s and several predecessor teams. This area of British Columbia boasts a strong ice hockey tradition and fan base that loves their local team. The story of professional hockey’s early years in Vancouver is an interesting look at how this tradition began.

A professional team called the Vancouver Millionaires was formed in 1911. They were one of three initial teams to make up the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA). This league was formed independently of the National Hockey Association (NHA). At first, PCHA teams tried to lure players from the NHA and from this effort, Vancouver acquired one of its earliest stars, Cyclone Taylor.

Before the PCHA began, the area had a team called the Creamery Kings. When the Kings were transforming into a new franchise and trying to forge contracts with big players, money was the best negotiating tool. Some of these first players were paid very high salaries which led to the eventual nickname Millionaires.

The two leagues later entered into an arrangement where their respective champions each year would play for the Stanley Cup. Within the first year of this agreement, the Millionaires won their league and went on to defeat the Ottawa Senators in the final Cup series.

This first final for Vancouver was in the 1914-15 season. Cyclone Taylor was a strong factor in the victories. The game scores were not close and the Millionaires swept their opponents in three games. Thousands of fans packed into their home arena to cheer their team to the championship. This was a far west journey for the Stanley Cup at the time. It remains the only Cup to be won by a Vancouver team.

The Millionaires maintained their winning ways in following years. They made the Stanley Cup final three more times but did not win the championship on any of those attempts. The Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) formed in 1921 and the Millionaires changed their name to the Maroons. The two western leagues agreed that their champs would play for advancement to the Stanley Cup final each year. Although the Maroons won the PCHA league two more times, they were not able to advance past the WCHL champions either time.

When the PCHA later became extinct, Vancouver played in the WCHL for its final few years though without the previous level of winning success. Although these leagues and the Maroons eventually folded, the city still honors its history and only Stanley Cup winning team. The original Millionaires jerseys have been commemorated in a sportswear line of clothing and also as a throwback jersey for the current day Canucks.

Fans in the early days of hockey in western Canada were crazy for their teams, and the fan base remains strong today. It must have been wild in their home Denman Arena when the team was in its heyday and winning championships. The Vancouvewr Canucks can draw on their early history as a foundation for their team today. It is an exciting and inspiring legacy.

Who Are The Toronto Maple Leafs?

The Toronto Maple Leafs are a hockey team part of the National Hockey League. They play out of Toronto, in Canada, in the province of Ontario. There are two conferences in the League and this team is part of the Eastern Conference.

The National Hockey League crowns a champion each year the the winner takes the Stanley Cup as trophy. The last time the Toronto Maple Leafs won the trophy was in 1967. Although they have not enjoyed very much success in many years, they still have a loyal fan base, win or lose. They manage to be competitive year after year even if they hardly ever make it to the big dance.

A huge part of the sports business is gathering a large corporate following in the business community and maintaining a very loyal fan base. The team is very luck because it plays in a good market and remains quite profitable. It is actually regarded as one of the best franchises to own in this league strictly for business purposes.

This sports club is part of the original six that first formed the National Hockey League. They have a long standing history and even though it has been decades since the last championship, they have twelve to their credit and are second in this chapter only to the Montreal Canadiens. Some might say they have a rich history having played for so many years.

The history along with the culture and adoration of hockey are factors that contribute to the loyal fan base. The fans are actually are called the “Leafs Nation” and you can find them mostly in the Greater Toronto Area. Of course, you can also find some of these fans in all of the other cities in North America. These fans are loyal and wherever they might be, they will continue to cheer for their favorite team.

In tradition, the teams that play in this league arbor three colors on their jerseys but this one does it differently. You really can’t mistake the white and blue uniforms on the ice though.

Most of the time, teams have two variations of the basic uniform. They have a light version and a darker one. The rivalries are what make this, just like any spectator sport, most interesting. Colorful History Of The Tampa Bay Lighting

One of the National Hockey League’s most successful expansion franchises has been the Tampa Bay lighting. They first took to the ice 1992 and within four short years they qualified for the playoffs. The Lightning story is rich with drama. There has been ownership turmoil, venue changes and championship euphoria. With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at this fascinating, if not somewhat unconventional, team.

The National Hockey League expanded in 1992 with additions in Ottawa and Tampa Bay. In the late 80s there were two groups seeking the franchise in the Bay area. Much of the drama began with one group front man, Phil Esposito, former player and member of the Hall of Fame. Late in the game, he lost his financial backers but did not let that get in his way.

During the final moments, Esposito got involved with a Japanese investor group. Not sufficiently satisfied, he then got the financial support of George Steinbrenner, majority owner of the New York Yankees. Steinbrenner would be a limited partner. With all this, Esposito and his group won the rights to a Tampa franchise.

The Lightning’s inaugural season was not exactly encouraging. But it was not an utter catastrophe either. Within one month of play they were atop of their division. However, the season ended in reverse. They finished the season in last place. They did manage to earn fifty-three points, a total which was the highest for any expansion’s team first year.

Their little amount of success they did see was quite remarkable when you take into account where they were playing. Home for the Lightening was a little expo hall within the Florida State Fairgrounds that only seated about 11,000 people. This tiny venue at the fairgrounds created more than a few chuckles and sneers.

The good news was that they would move out of the hall the next year. Now for the bad news. They moved to the Thunder Dome (initially called the Florida Suncoast Dome). This dome was built to house baseball games and was in St. Petersburg. Luckily they did move out of there too and the new baseball team, the Devil Rays (now the Rays) moved in in 1998. The Thunder Dome is now called Tropicana Field.

In addition to venue issues, the team suffered from ownership problems. By the mid-nineties the team was facing bankruptcy and was being investigated by the IRS. There was even talk that Japanese crime syndicates were involved in the money matters of the team. Finally, after a short-lived ownership by Art Williams, the club was sold to Bill Davidson, owner of the Detroit Pistons. It was at this point that Tampa’s fortunes changed for the better.

Things turned around very quickly for them. It could have been the new ownership or it may have been their new arena. Eventually in 1996 they moved into a suitable venue, the Ice Palace, which was later renamed the St. Pete Times Forum. Whatever it was, they saw some good times. Unexpectedly, they became the Stanly Cup winners in 2004 with a victory over the Calgary Flames. They attracted many fans who loved their “underdog” status.

A Simple History Lesson On The St Louis Blues

The St Louis Blues have been a part of the National Hockey League or NHL since their humble start in 1967. There is a rich history that includes some of hockeys all time great players behind this impressive team. The team rosters over the years have had a lot of the all time great players from the past and even in more recent years.

Dickie Moore, Glenn Hall, Doug Harvey, and Jacques Plante were some of the major hockey stars that helped the team to get its impressive start. More recently Brett Hull, Dale Hawerchuk, Peter Stastny, and Wayne Gretzky have all played with the team as well. There have been many memorable owners to go along with all of these amazing players.

A pair of the most famous owners were the architects Emile Francis and Lynn Patrick. There were some amazing and well known team builders that were a part of the team including Jimmy Devellano and Cliff Fletcher. Plus the coaching staff has included just as many greats like Al Arbour, Scotty Bowman, and Jacques Demers.

Success has been felt even without a Stanley Cup win. However the downside to success is that tragedy is felt harder including the loss of loved players, sports casters, and coaches to tragedy and death. Therefore when the team has pushed on their pride has swollen and they have had a perseverance that others might not have felt.

The different owners have often set the moods that the players had while spending their time playing for the Blues. Some of the owners have been tough and offered few things besides a chance to play a sport that one loves. While other owners have given their players cars and other gifts that were meant to attract them to stay with the team.

There have been many times where there has been more than one owner. During the time period of 1971 through 1977 co-owners had some serious problems and the strife caused one of them to leave. In addition at this time finances became a struggle and between 1976 and 1983 which ended in the doors being closed.

Soon after in 1983, even though they were not able to participate in the draft that year, the Blues were up and running under new ownership. During this time things became profitable and once again an industry leader was born. Plus the spirit that has gone along with these changes has led many fans in the city and elsewhere to feel pride and happiness in a team that was once failing.

So it can easily be seen why a St Louis Blues fan is completely different from most sports fans. They have been through the good, bad, ups and downs with their team and continue to have pride in what could have been. There is no reason to predict anything but a positive future at this time.

Looking At The Pittsburgh Penguins

It came as no surprise that in 1966, Pittsburgh was awarded the expansion franchise by the National Hockey League. The group of investors seeking to get the team included some of America’s more influential players of industry. Some of the people involved were Art Rooney, owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Mellon and Heinz families. And that was the beginning of hockey for fans of western Pennsylvania. Here we will take a look at some of the history of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Typically, in any sport, expansion teams have a tendency to do less then well during their first few years. This was not how it went for the Penguins. They ended their debut season (1967-68) with only four more losses than wins. This is hardly great, but is not too bad for a new team. They also pulled off a feat of embarrassing one of the NHL’s “Original Six” with a 4-2 defeat over the Chicago Blackhawks.

1969 brought hope to Penguin fans. The team was able to acquire a rookie named Michel Briere. He scored more goals than any other rookie that year. The club took advantage of his talent and made it to the Western semi-finals. Ultimately, Pitt lost to the St. Louis Blues 4 games to 2 but the fans could see that they had reason to believe in the future of their team.

Shortly after, the hockey world was struck with some horrifying news. The terrific rookie, Briere, was in a horrible auto accident in Canada. He suffered massive head injuries and spent a year in a coma. He passed away shortly thereafter.

Stepping away from that sad moment, we skip ahead to 1984. In would be an understatement to say that that year’s draft was a landmark occasion. For this is when the Penguins picked up a player who would ultimately become known as possibly the best player ever. The Pens had the first overall pick that year, which many rivals believed to be a scam. They accused Pittsburgh of purposely playing badly toward the end of the season in order to be awarded first pick.

True or not, the fact is that the team drafted Mario Lemieux. The list of all he accomplished is seemingly endless. He led his team to Stanly Cup victories in both 1991 and 1992. He has won dozens of NHL awards and trophies. In 1988 he accomplished something amazing that had never been done before, or since. In a single game against the New Jersey Devils, he scored all five ways possible: regular strength, shorthanded, penalty shot, empty net and power play.

Just as rival fans (and teams) breathed a sigh of relief following Lemieux’ retirement, another Penguin superstar burst on to the scene. His name was Sidney Crosby. He was the youngest team captain, at age twenty-one, to lead his team to the Cup. At this time though his awards were still at least a dozen shy of Lemieux’.

Today the Penguins are still a powerful force. They are always at or close to the top of the standings. Oh, and of course Sidney Crosby still plays there and still makes a difference to the team.

A Look Back At The Philadelphia Flyers

In the mid 1960s it became known that the NHL was looking to expand the number of teams from six. The league was looking to take a preemptive strike against any rival league thinking of becoming the NHL’s competitor. As such, six new teams were introduced into the league. One of those teams was the Philadelphia flyers; and they would go on to be one of hockey’s, if not all sports’, most successful expansion franchises. With this in mind, let’s delve into some history of the Flyers.

The six expansion teams were all lumped into the same division. So as the 1967-68 season came to a close, it was the Flyers who were on top of the heap, despite having a below . 500 record. Their first playoff experience did not go well. They were eliminated in the first round by the St. Louis blues in seven games.

Things did not get better for them right away. The 1969-70 season saw only 17 wins for Philly and no trip to the playoffs. But there was one interesting tradition that came about that year. One night, Lou Schienfield, vice president of the team, played Kate Smith’s awe inspiring version of “God Bless America” in lieu of the national anthem before a game. He wanted to do something different to engage the fans who seemed distant before game time. The crowd loved it and it became a tradition that still takes place today. On a number of occasions, Kate Smith was invited to games to perform it live.

In the 1970s the Flyers, who played at the Spectrum, located on Broad Street, became known for playing a very physical game, if not a brawling kind of hockey game. This earned them the nickname “Broad Street Bullies” which stuck with them.

Perhaps this moniker was inspirational to the club because their absence from playoff games did not last too long. The 1974 Flyer team stole victory from Bobby Orr and his Boston Bruins. Thus, the coveted Stanly Cup was won by an expansion team in just 7 years.

The 1974 championship run proved not to be a fluke. One year later the Bullies found themselves in the thick of the Cup chase again. After a brutal and contentious seven game semi-final series against the New York Rangers, they emerged victorious. The next foe was the Buffalo Sabres. It resulted in Philadelphia earning hockey’s top prize. They defeated the Sabres four games to two.

Throughout the storied, if not brief, history of the franchise many players have achieved legendary status. Topping the list is Bobby Clarke. He made his debut in 1969 and went on to become a member of the NHL’s Hall of Fame. He won three Most Valuable Player awards and is recognized by experts as one the game’s best one hundred players ever to lace up the skates.

The Philadelphia flyers have come to be known as a consistent team that is always in the game. Every year they are part of the playoff race. During hockey season it is pretty much assumed that a glance in the newspaper will show Philly at the top of division standings or at least very close to the top.

A Look At The Detroit Red Wings

Bring up the Detroit Red Wings in a conversation with a hockey fan, and you are sure to get a reaction. The Wings have become a bit like the New York Yankees of baseball. People either love them or they hate them. This is really no surprise. Just like the Yanks are considered baseball’s best team, the Wings have become hockey’s best. They are the model of hockey success. First of all, they have won more championships than any other team based in the States. Furthermore, they rank third in number of Cups won. With this in mind, we are going to talk today about their interesting history.

The team became part of the National Hockey League in 1926. In their first year, their home games were actually played in Windsor, Canada and they were called the Cougars. The next year, they played in Michigan at the Detroit Olympia. Neither year was kind to the franchise. First they finished dead last and then they finished fourth with a record of 19-19-6.

But the fans did not have a long wait before seeing success. In 1929, the Cougars made it to the playoffs. They lost, however, to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Their nickname was changed to the Red Wings in 1932. This seemed to be a good omen for the club. Between 1933 and 1966, they failed to make it to the playoffs just four times.

Detroit made it to their first Cup final series in 1934, pitted against the Chicago Blackhawks. This was exciting for the fans, though they did lose that series 3-1. They returned to the Championship Series again the following year with a different outcome. This time their opponent was the Maple Leafs, whim they beat in four games. What is more impressive is that they followed through the next year with a victory over the New York Rangers.

In 1946, the sport of hockey was gifted with the arrival of one of its best players ever. Gordie Howe, from Saskatchewan, is a legend of the game and a member of the Hall of Fame. He is called “Mr. Hockey” and for good reason. One reason is that he is the only player to play in five different decades. He skated his way to fame in the 40s through the 80s.

Adding to the justification of the nickname is his multitudes of accomplishments on the ice. He played with four Stanly Cup winning teams, led the league in scoring six times and took home six MVP awards. When Howe was 80 years old, he was presented with the first ever Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mr. Hockey’s teams were not always successful. Red Wing teams had a horrible stretch of time from 1967 to 1983. Fans were repeatedly frustrated year after year as they saw their team only reach the playoffs twice and win one series.

Nowadays you will receive no argument about how good the Red Wings are. Unlike their dreadful stretch during the Sixties and Eighties, the years from 1990 to the present have been remarkable. They have made the playoffs every year. This playoff streak is the longest in not just hockey, but of all major North American sports.
