West Virgina 2010

Well here we are again it is the end of another football season and re looking at what is ahead of West Virginia when they take the field in the upcoming season. There are several areas that will need a careful look at when West Virginia take to the field.

Many people say that the team is destined to repeat their season like they did last season but I am a little more optimistic that West Virginia will be able to make massive improvements in their offense that will make them a tough team to beat. This past signing day there was the largest signing class that West Virginia has had in quite a few years past.

There are several players that appear that they will be able to bring a lot of power to the roster in 2010. These players are able to be the needed talent that the team has been looking for over the past few years. The wide receiver position will be one that will have a highly contested battle as to who will get the starting spot. There are several people that will be watching this battle closely and will be curious as to who will be the target of the quarterback in 2010.

In the rushing game there will be no doubt as to who will have the task of driving the football to the end zone. This will be the most important year that the returning running back will have this season as they will need to make a strong showing in the final year before next years NFL draft. The Team is looking to have a strong season that will drive them to make a strong case as to why they deserve to have a shot at the national championship.

If West Virginia does everything right then there is no real reason as to why they will not be able to make a run for the national championship. These are just a few of the reasons as to why there will be a strong case for West Virginia.

To run for the national championship. There will be a lot of hard games that are going to be tough forWest Virginia to get past and make headway in the 2010 season.

Defense is going to be another reason as to why there will be a tough year for West Virginia, as they will have a difficult time stopping their opponents to score on their possessions.

I am here to say that I am behind West Virginal to become stronger this season and as a result I truly believe that they will make a strong surge for the holy grail of college football.

In the end it will be interesting to see as to where will the underdogs of West Virginia wind up being at the end of their season. If you are a fan of West Virginia then this will be the year to get behind the team and help to push them towards another strong push for the National Championship.

West Virginia

The West Virginian Mountaineers of Morgantown, West Virginia has a lot going for them in 2010. So much (and the fact that the ongoing war between Rutgers is always good entertainment), the Mountaineers have inspired this preview. Veteran head coach Bill Stewart is still serving as the Mountaineers fearless leader.

2009 wasn’t a bad year at all for West Virginia. They came out with an overall score of 9-4 and a 5-2 Big East score—making them 3rd in the Conference. However, they did narrowly lose the much-celebrated Gator Bowl—33-21 going to Florida.

The 2010 season is among them, however. The Mountaineers, fortunately, seem to have retained a lot of their talent and minimized their losses to the NFL Draft. Those players that have left West Virginia include (most unfortunately) Jarrett Brown, the team’s former quarterback; Selvish Capers of the offensive tackle; Reed Williams–the linebacker cornerback, and wide receiver Alric Arnett.

Offense

It might be a surprise that Geno Smith ended up filling Jarrett Brown’s shoes as 2010 season’s quarterback, especially because of his limited spring practice experience (broken foot). Smith completed 32 of 49 (65%) of passes last season, had a touchdown and an interception. Also, he made 15 of 21 towards 147 yards for the team plus a touchdown in the 24-7 won game against Marshall.

Star running back Noel Devine is returning for 2010—despite rumors that he was going to the Draft early. Devine, in particular, is faster than a rocket. He rushed 1,465 yards and managed 13 touchdowns last season—making him nearly indispensable to the team. FB Ryan Clarke is another threat to the competition. With lightening fast reflexes, and 250/8 in yardage and touchdowns in ’09, he’ll pair with Devine to provide Geno Smith a great safety net.  Receiver Jock Sanders (one of the team’s most valuable assets) will take the outside.

Defense

The Mountaineer’s defense line is a little shaky going into the 2010 season. Some of the key talent in the pass rushing game—among the linebacker corps–will be missing. Additionally, with Pat Lazear and Reed Williams absent, the defense is going to have to put in triple time.

Seniors Chris Neild and J.T Thomas carry-over to the 2010 season.  Thomas is a very formidable foe as linebacker and Neild, while he doesn’t rack up the big statistics, is still a great asset in what he does in the center. The sophomore tight end Julian Miller continues with the Mountaineers; he proved himself in the last season with 9 sacks.

Robert Sands, the recipient of the 2009 All-Big East award, will faithfully serve as free safety. The five interceptions and 65 tackles by Sands put him where he is today—he’s also on the road to becoming one of the best safeties in the history of his division. In the cornerback positions, there is All-American H.M. Brandon Hogan and Keith Tandy. The 2010 bandit position will go to senior Sidney Glover, who has become accustomed to starting as spur safety.

Conclusion

Pittsburgh, Cincy and Rutgers all seem to be in cahoots with each other—each vying for the Big East title.  For the Scarlet Knights and Mountaineers, though, that’s a pretty lofty dream.  Cincinnati easily has my money for the Big East crown, but the Mountaineers could easily take 3rd to Rutgers.
