400 wins
Joe Paterno has won 400 games in the big time arena of college football. It has been done in the small schools by two others but no one has ever done anything like this at a school like Penn State
It is hard to imagine a person coaching at a school long enough to win 400 games. That is an average of 10 wins per season for 40 years. I think Joe Paterno has done it in 45 years. He is the first major college coach to ever hit 400 wins. Two other coaches have won over 400 in the small school divisions. Eddie Robinson at Gramblin and John Gagliardi at St. John’s, Minn .
But to do this at a school like Penn State.
Coach Paterno was born in 1926 on Dec. 21st in Brooklyn, NY
1950 he graduated from Brown University and takes job at Penn State as an Assistant Coach.
1962 He married Suzanne Pohland
1966 Named Penn States 14th head coach on Feb. 19. Wins first game over Maryland 15-7. He ends the season 5 and 5
1968 had first undefeated season.
When Coach Paterno was named the Head Coach at Penn State. Gas was thirty cents per gallon. A twenty six inch bicycle was 29.95
Alarm clock was 1.99
The average cost of a home was around $3500
Average income was $5500 per year
A new car was around $2000
That ought to give you some since of how long he has been there. I for one know he is doing a good job but I also have a deep respect for a school like Penn State. To know that they have stuck with this one coach for so long in an age were College football has become such a big business. My hat is off to Joe and to Penn State.
