Oklahoma State Baseball

Finding great baseball players that will not burn out after their first year in the pros is not easy. There are several things that you need to look at when you are talking about great players to come from the State of Oklahoma .

Many people think that all of the talent from this state passes through the University of Oklahoma, little do they know that Oklahoma State University has produced their own line of great baseball players that went on to have successful careers on the professional level.

The Cowboys went to seven straight CWS appearances from 81-87, and have went to a total of 19 CWS appearances. They have been led to one National championship. And have made several other NCAA appearances in the past several years where they were runner-up in a number of those appearances.

One of the players that has made a lot of noise as being a Cowboy was Robin Ventura. He was one of the first players to be inducted in the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006, as a player for Oklahoma State Ventura made quite and impression.

Earning several awards during his college career. It was 1993 that will be his lasting notoriety. This is the year that him and Nolan Ryan decided to mix it up. This came after Ventra was hit by a wild pitch from Ryan.

Now we all know that this was not on purpose, but Ventra saw things differently, and decided to throw punches in response to this incident.

Jeff Salazar is another player that has brought a sense of honor to the Oklahoma State name. While in the majors Salazar posted impressive numbers that even for a rookie can not be argued with.

The teams that he has played for have benefited from the contributions that he has brought. These teams have been led by a player that has a true love for the game and is just looking for a team upon which to share that love of the game with.

The players that have called The Oklahoma State Cowboys home in the past, are the same players that have went on to play for other great teams. These players have came to these teams to bring the same level of success that they had with the Cowboys, to these teams and make them a better team all around as a result of this desire to play the game.

College Game Day : Looking for Bowl Bids and Blankets this November?

It is a beautiful fall Saturday and its college game day.  Millions of college football fans are waking up to the preparation of “getting ready for the big game” or many fans have the intention of watching more than one game day with the anticipation of  bowl games , conference championship games and some fans are hopeful their team can land a spot to play in the “big one”, the   BCS championship .

It’s only the first week of November, maybe too early to make a valid prediction, but that does not stop the true college football fan from spending hours on Saturday dreaming about their team winning today’s  game or maybe even thinking about who they want to win in an unrelated game. For example, I was speaking to an Arkansas fan who is definitely watching the LSU vs Alabama game today. He will be strategically cheering for LSU today, for no other reason than it would help Arkansas out in the rankings if Alabama loses.

College game days in November have a different flavor that other game day Saturdays in September or October. The chill in the air changes the menu under the tailgate tent. Yes, there may still be the traditional hamburgers, bar-b-que and steaks but on colder days, you can expect chili, soups and a wonderful hearty roast with vegetables in simmering in the crock pot. The aroma fills the air and everyone is hungry.

Tailgate preparation in November means getting out the propane heater, the blankets, coats, hats, gloves and maybe even the long underwear and wool socks.  Be prepared; enjoy the fellowship and the comradely that can only happen as fans gather together on game day, the first Saturday in November.

Big 12 Week 7 Wrap

In the Big 12 this week we had some great games. Kansas State and Bill Snyder welcomed Turner Gill into the conference with a Kansas welcome party by soundly whipping them 59-7. If Gill is going to hang around he is going to have to get some consistency within his program.
Missouri and Gary Pinkel hung a L on Coach Mike Sherman and the A&M Aggies 30-9. Tommy Tubberville after coming over from the SEC had his hands full as the grown men of Oklahoma State defeated Texas Tech 34-17. Baylor beat Colorado 31-25. Oklahoma romped and stomped on Iowa State 52-0 and last but not least. Texas said goodbye to Bo Pallini in a proper Big 12 fashion by defeating the so called #5 Nebraska Cornhuskers 20-13
With Missouri leading the northern Big12 at 6-0 followed by Kansas State and Nebraska and Oklahoma and Oklahoma State both undefeated in the Southern division, the Big 12 is going to have a really exciting 2nd half of this season.
