Georgia Bulldogs College Football

Click edit above to add content to this empty capsule.

After what could only be called an interesting eight and five record last season the Georgia Bulldogs feel that they could have done better, but are still very happy with their finish. There are a lot of fans of Georgia who also agree that the team did well but could have done better. This was a season that although respectable was nothing to write home about. But 2009 is over and we look forward to the 2010 Georgia Bulldog football season.

So what does 2010 hold in store for the Georgia Bulldogs? To put it bluntly, and hopefully not too optimistically, at minimum an SEC championship. Of course, this is all dependent on Alabama, if they are as aggressive and hyper dominating as they were last year, Alabama may very well stand in the way of the Bulldogs reaching an SEC title. On the positive side for Bulldogs, signing day was like Christmas morning, as the team managed a remarkable feat of getting ink on paper for every single recruit they had on their wish list.

In addition to this, their 2010 schedule looks to be a slow comfortable ride for them. This is due to the fact that the majority of the major talent on most of their opposing teams as graduated or was lost in the draft; coupled with the fact that the remaining teams are all dealing with massive coaching changes. One of the teams in question dealing with their coaching woes is Tennessee who is still trying to pieces back together after the royal backstabbing act that was performed on them by the incorrigible Mr. Kiffen. We all remember Coach Kiffen don’t we? This is a bottom feeding slime ball that was hired by UT to head up the team in their rebuilding phase and be football’s equivalent of “welcome savior” only to pack up his bags and jump on the nearest jet, setting off to California to take a “better” job USC after only one season.

But it could be stated that Tennessee’s loss will definitely be George’s win. The Bulldogs can probably count on an easy check mark in that W column as well, when they face up against Florida. The massive changes in the gators locker room in the off-season department have left the team being almost certainly inconsequential in the 2010 season.

On the opposite side of the coin however the gators do have to be careful when they face up against Colorado and Arkansas. Colorado is turning into a serious powerhouse team and after several seasons of being the joke of the SEC Arkansas has gotten their pride back and seems to have learned how to play football again. This could be a serious problem for the Bulldogs in the fact that with everything they have going in their favor they have still yet to address the weaknesses in their ground game. the Bulldogs have had in the past a good running game, but this line was powered by a couple of guys who we will be seen next year in NFL uniforms; leaving the Bulldogs, if you will pardon the expression, holding their jock and trying to figure out how to get the ball down stream without their main drivers. The only hope the Bulldogs have in solving this it is in training camp, putting forth every ounce of effort that they can to get the rookies up to speed before opening day.

Herschel Walker: From High School To Heisman Winner Between the Hedges.

By Coach On May 17, 2011 No Comments

Any college football fan knows what those 3 words mean and what team and stadium it can be associated with. The University of Georgia football team plays in Athens, Georgia in Sanford Stadium. Sanford Stadium is surrounded by English privet hedges, blocking the field from the fans, hence the phrase between the hedges. The University of Georgia football program has a rich tradition of effective teams. Having said that, there is one season in particular that took the program from a regionally well-known program into a national identified program. The 1980 football season for the Georgia Bulldogs is among the greatest seasons that a college football program can have. The 1980 team won the national championship and dominated most teams on their schedule throughout the year culminating with a Sugar Bowl victory against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 17-10. On the other hand, this 1980 season, which included exceptional play from upperclassmen, for example Buck Belue and Lindsay Scott, is recognized for a freshman that would begin his college career with such impact that it catapulted him to a level of infamy that few following him have come close to attaining. The freshman that took the country by storm throughout the 1980 season was running back Herschel Walker. Walker, from the state of Georgia, came to the University of Georgia amongst significantly hoopla soon after coming off a season in which he won the national high school athlete of the year right after leading his high school team to their lone state championship in 1979. So to say the least, the expectations were pretty high for Walker coming into to his very first season at Georgia, on the other hand what he would accomplish was nicely beyond any of the high expectations that many had just before the season began. Walker being a highly touted freshman had a lot of eyes on him, on the other hand, it seemed as if Walker welcomed the pressure and basked under it. Throughout his 1st season he rushed for over 1,600 yards, averaging almost 150 yards a game which includes 15 touchdowns and was third within the Heisman voting, which was nearly unheard of for a freshman at that time. He also set the record for most rushing yards by a freshman by running for 283 yards against Vanderbilt University. With the success of Walker, he was a driving force behind the 1980 National Championship season for the Georgia Bulldogs . He was able to take pressure off the other players on the team due the teams focusing all their energies on stopping Walker, although no team was successful and Georgia would go undefeated in Walker’s initial season. To this day, all freshman running backs are compared to the statistics that Walker was able to put up. This not just consists of Georgia running backs, but running backs from all over the nation. Walker’s freshman season is deemed by several to be the best ever by a freshman and also the finest ever overall because of the ease by which Walker was able to dominate opponents with his speed and strength. Walker is synonymous with Georgia football and a lot of these days lengthy for the days of Walker dominating on the field. Georgia Bulldog Watch, Men’s Belt, St. Louis Cardinals Watch

Another wild week in the SEC!

By Coach On November 1, 2010 No Comments

The SEC knows exactly how to keep their fans on the edge of their seats. In some of the wildest games of the year, teams from around the SEC put on a show!  The South Carolina Gamecocks and Tennessee Volunteers faced off first in a showdown that came down to the fourth quarter. Tennessee finally got their passing game up to par until Alshon Jeffery of the Gamecocks had a 70-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The World’s largest Outdoor Cocktail Party between the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs in Jacksonville, Florida was a shoot out to remember. Trey Burton and John Brantley of the Gators put of 450 yards of total offense to lead the Gators. The game went into overtime before Florida’s punter/place-kicker hit a 37-yard field goal in overtime to give the Gators the victory and keep them alive in the Eastern Division race.

The Vanderbilt Commodores traveled to Arkansas for their homecoming. Vanderbilt came out swinging early and took a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Ryan Mallet and the hogs took charge and scored 43 unanswered points. Mallet broke his own single game record for passing yards and finished the day with 409 yards and 3 touchdowns. That total was the highest for any player in the SEC this season.

Mississippi State hosted the Kentucky Wildcats which was a defensive battle. It came down to the final seconds as Kentucky was driving down trailing the Bulldogs 24-17, before Hartline was intercepted at the goal line with seconds to spare. The Bulldogs were lead by senior linebacker Chris White who posted a career-high 15 tackles with one for loss and one interception. The Bulldogs are on a six game winning streak, but have a tough road ahead facing Alabama, Arkansas, and Ole Miss.

The last and most exciting game of the week came down between the Auburn Tigers and Ole Miss. Ole Miss came out striking when Jeff Scott raced 83 yards for a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage for the Rebels. He finished with 134 yards on nine carries. Jeremiah Masoli, a transfer and running threat like Newton, completed 20 of 33 passes for 189 yards with a touchdown and an interception for Ole Miss. He ran for 29 yards. Both Masoli and Scott were no match for Cam Newton who became the third Auburn player to have touchdowns passing, rushing and receiving in the same season, joining Carnell Williams (2004) and Kodi Burns (2009), the quarterback-turned receiver who threw the pass to Newton. The 6-foot-6 Newton outfought 5-10 cornerback Jeremy McGee in the role reversal. Newton was 18-of-24 passing, and ran 11 times for 45 yards after running wild in recent weeks.

The Auburn Tigers are now number 2 in the BCS standings and if they win out, are guaranteed a spot in this year’s BCS National Championship game. The only problem is that they play in the SEC which has been a crazy conference this year.

What a year in the South Eastern Conference!

By Coach On October 20, 2010 No Comments

All summer long, it looked like Alabama would be the team to beat, but who knew that it would be the two Tigers that were the top dogs. That’s right Auburn and LSU. The SEC has always had its two powerhouse teams, but this year all has changed. The SEC West has 5 out of the 6 teams ranked in the Top 25, while the East is only boasting in one with South Carolina.
It’s still a guess who will end up in Atlanta on December 4th to play for the SEC championship. With Auburn, Alabama, and LSU still having to play each other this year, things are still bound to get shaken up. Auburn and LSU face on Oct 23, which will give the West a little room. Then LSU and Alabama face off on Nov.6, before Bama faces Auburn on Nov 26. That’s just in the West. The Eastern Division is still anyone’s game through midseason.
It is just a mess in the East, with Florida losing three straight conference games; they could still end up in Atlanta playing for a conference championship. If they can beat Georgia in Jacksonville on Oct. 30, Vanderbilt on the road on Nov. 6 and South Carolina at home on Nov. 13. There has not been a three-loss champion represent the division in Atlanta since divisional play started in 1992.
Who knows where the conference will stand this year, but one thing for sure is if the SEC wants to send a team to the BCS National Championship for a 5th straight year, a hard road lies ahead. Auburn is sitting at No. 4 in the first BCS standings, but LSU isn’t far behind at No. 6. Alabama is the highest one-loss team nationally at No. 8.
The SEC is still going to have some work cut out for them if both Oklahoma and Oregon remain undefeated. The past does show that if an SEC team goes unbeaten through the regular season, the voters have rewarded them. Florida jumped up to the top two spots in 2008 and in 2006 after being 10th and 6th in the first BCS Standings.
The Auburn Tigers look like they are the team to beat from this point forward. Cam Newton is a machine and has been racking up the yards and the touchdowns on every team they have faced so far. If LSU or Alabama have a say in it, they will have to shut down Newton.
From record setting scores, to major upsets, the SEC has been full of a ton of surprises. The crazy thing is we are only half way through the season. There is no telling what is in store for college football fans as we embark on the second half of the year. Will the SEC send a team to the BCS National Championship game, or will a new conference take over as this year’s best? Only time will tell, but one thing for certain is that it will be entertaining.

SEC in Week 7

By Coach On October 18, 2010 No Comments

So here we are in Week 7 of college football.
The SEC is still leading the pack with 3 teams in the top 10 and 6 in the top 25. Even though some of the poll guys don’t take into account that the guys from the SEC play in the SEC so there are going to be some really good teams playing some other really good teams.
So number 12 from last week Arkansas played number 7 Auburn. It was a literal shootout with all kinds of records being broken in scoring. Arkansas gun slinger got hurt in the first half with a concussion. Ryan Mallet was in street cloths during the 2nd half. His backup Tyler Wilson cam in and did a great job. Except for about 20 seconds where he had two turnovers that probably caused the game to get away.
Alabama pretty much dominated the Black Bears of Mississippi. Bouncing back to form after losing to a very good South Carolina last week.
South Carolina on the other hand loses to Kentucky with some great plays at the end by Jocker Phillips Wildcats.
Mississippi States Dan Mullen took his much improved Bulldogs down to the Swamp and handed his old mentor Urban Meyers his first 3rd lost in a row of his career. Mullens said it was not an upset his team expected to win the game. Upset or not the Bulldogs are making people take notice.
Georgia seems to be getting back on track after getting their top player back after a lengthy suspension. The man handled Vanderbilt 43-0.
LSU started slow but easily handled McNeese State 32-10
Things we discovered in the SEC is that Cam Newton is for real. He has shown up as a legitimate Heisman contender. As good as Newton is the Tiger defense may be just as bad. The Tigers have yet to stop anybody who can throw the ball. They were shredded by Arkansas’s 2nd string quarterback. It’s official. Mississippi State is the SEC’s most improved team. The Bulldogs are 5-2 have won 4 straight games. They are winning the old fashion way by hitting people in the mouth. State ran the ball 49 of 58 plays and had 24 straight running plays at one point in the game. Also let it be know that the two games that MSU has lost were to two teams that are as of now undefeated this season. Both ranked in the top 10 in the country.
In Florida it is looking like Tebow light is the way to go. Brantly may be a great athlete but Florida is still doing much better when he is not at QB.
And the last question in the SEC is does anyone really want to win the East. It seems that the 4th or 5th team in the West could be better than number 1 in the East.
But again this is the SEC and anything can happen. Remember in the SEC it is not that far from Top to Bottom. Pretty much any of them can win at any time.

Georgia Bulldogs

By Coach On August 22, 2009 No Comments

Georgia Bulldogs felt no pressure going into Wednesday night’s game against Vanderbilt. Over all they’ve gone 11-17 and have secured a last place standing in the Southeastern East Division.
Perhaps that’s why they did so well.
Georgia snapped Vanderbilt’s four game winning streak and took the game 61-57. The Bulldogs outscored the Commodores 8-3, earning their second win in the conference. Georgia can now claim two wins in the last four games after coming off of an 11 game losing skid.
“It’s not going to help our seeding in the NCAA tournament,” senior captain Corey Butler said sarcastically. But it’s playing for pride. You ask to play on this level because you want to play against world-class athletes.
“You don’t stop being a competitor just because you haven’t won as much as you’d like.”
During the first half, Georgia played well, holding the Commodores at a 25 percent shooting effort from the floor. A.J. Ogilvy led the commodores with only 12 points and 8 rebounds. The Bulldogs landed on top snagging a 34-23 lead into halftime.
“Up in Nashville, we weren’t aggressive and we only scored 40 points,” interim head coach Pete Herrmann said. “Tonight, we wanted to stay aggressive all game on offense and defense. On defense, we wanted to put pressure on their players and dictate where the ball went. We especially wanted to pressure (A.J.) Ogilvy down low.”
Terrance Woodward fouled out early and Georgia sent Vanderbilt to the charity line a total of 26 times.
“We kept telling the players, don’t let the referees take away your aggressiveness. The big guys getting in foul trouble early on, there’s nothing wrong with it. It shows our aggressiveness, and it set the tone early on.”
The second half, the Bulldogs were up by 14 points, but Vanderbilt went on a 23-8 run closing the gap and taking the lead at 54-53. The Bulldogs fell behind with three minutes left in the game, but Ricky Mcphee brought them back with a 3 pointer and cemented the win.
The three pointer gave the Bulldogs a boost and they held on to claim the four point lead.
“I just wanted to be conscious of taking good shots,” said McPhee, who scored a game-high 14 points. “I wanted to be sure I made it and not risk taking a fading three or anything like that. But I got the open three at the end, and it was a big shot.”
In addition to Ricky Mcphee’s 14 points off the bench, including three three pointers, Corey Bulter and Dustin Ware both scored 10 points each. Vanderbilt recorded 14 turnovers in the contest.
“We focused on just remaining composed,” said Georgia senior Corey Butler. “We’ve been in that situation way too many times. We should’ve learned from this a long time ago. Actually this time we said there was no reason why we shouldn’t win this game, and we did.”

Georgia has 19 sports. Those teams have won 37 championships at the national level. They have won 130 conference championships.
The Bulldogs got their name more than a century ago. The ‘Bulldog’ was chosen because of their ferocity.
Sanford Stadium at Georgia holds roughly 93,000 people. Georgia’s most historic rivalry can be traced back to 1892. The Auburn Tigers have played many close games with Georgia.
Georgia Tech and Florida are Georgia’s other chief rivals. Really, all of the SEC East teams are big rivals of Georgia. These conference and division games feature two tough teams who both want to win. Georgia Tech and Georgia are in-state rivals that compete in just about everything.
During the 1980s, Georgia competed with Clemson. That was a big rivalry during that time. The teams have been playing yearly because they are in the same division.
The football team has had recent success.
Georgia’s football game with Florida is deemed by many Bulldogs fans as a favoring of Florida. This game is not a home-home series like most all of college football’s games. This game is played on a neutral site in Jacksonville, FL. It doesn’t seem fair to Bulldogs fans because Jacksonville is only 73 miles away from Gainesville, FL, but a whopping 342 miles from Athens, GA. Georgia has the edge in this series. Florida somewhat closed the gap in the past two decades. Georgia recognizes the series record as 47-38-2. This includes the football game in 1904 before Florida sanctioned their football program. However, Georgia counts that game because it’s a game that was actually played between the two teams. Recently, the two teams have almost split the last 5 games. Florida won in 2005, ‘06, and ‘08. Georgia won in 2004 and ’07. From 1990 and 2003, Florida went 15-1. This somewhat closed the gap but Georgia still holds about a 10 game edge between the two schools.
