History

When you hear Duke, you immediately think of the word “basketball”. This is because they’re amongst college basketballs best. A school in the top 5 all-time in victories. A team winning a national championship nearly 25% of the time when being invited to the NCAA Tournament. A team that has won just under 10 National Player of the Year awards.

A school that is know for having their former players on NBA rosters. As a matter of fact, they lead all college basketball programs with current NBA players. A school that’s had the same head coach for the past 30 seasons. A team that has won just under 20 regular season conference(ACC) championships. A school that has also claimed 18 post-season conference tournament titles.

They have won 19 regular season ACC championships. And, not to be outdone, 18 ACC tournament championships as well. Duke is ranked #2 all time for being ranked as the #1 team only trailing UCLA in that category.

They have also garnered a total of fifty-five All-Americans. To show their academic side, they have a total of fourteen Academic All-Americans. Under current coach Mike Krzyewski, Duke has made the NCAA Tournament 26 times. They have been to 19 Sweet Sixteens.

Duke has been a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament a whopping eleven times. Winning 30 or more games a total of eleven different times. Out of 1,015 games under Krzyewski, the won a whopping 795 of them. Only losing a grand total of 220 of those games games played. Under his reign, Duke has claimed a national title about once of every 7.5 years including the most recent 2010 campaign.

Previous Hoop Superstars

Duke has passed through some very talented basketball players. A total of 9 previous players that have received National Player of the Year honors. From a 1952 point guard to a 3-pt specialist in 2005. Dick Groat claimed the first Player of the Year award for Duke nearly 60 years ago. Eleven years later, Art Heyman claimed the honors.

Danny Ferry took the honor in 1989. Christian Laettner won it in 1992. Elton Brand garnered the award in 1999. Shane Battier followed by winning in 2001. Jason Williams won the award in 2002 the next year right after Battier won it. The final claim to this award goes to J.J. Redick back in 2005.

The two biggest names on this lists are probably Danny Ferry & Christian Laettner. Ferry played at Duke from 1985-1989. He won first team All-American in 1989 & second team All-American in 1988. Ferry has the single game scoring record at Duke with 58 points in a game. He ranks 5th all-time in points & also 5th in total rebounds.

Laettner has a special place in history. He knocked down a buzzer-beating jumper against the Kentucky Wildcats in the 1992 NCAA Tournament. Laettner is an NCAA tournament record holder in numerous categories. He has a total of 407 points. He has 142 FT’s made. He has 167 FT’s attempted. He has played in a total of 23 tournament games. He is also the all-time Duke leader in three-point percentage. He appeared in the Final Four during all of his seasons at Duke & was a starter in all four of those too.

He is also currently the all-time Duke leader in 3-pt percentage at 48.5%. Laettner is also one of only four players to have played in 4 straight Final Fours. However, he’s the only one to have started in all Final Fours.
