2010 Arizona Diamondbacks, what went wrong?

It is now official; the Arizona Diamondbacks are one of the worst teams in professional baseball. This has been made official since they are now currently 28-44. The Arizona Diamondbacks suffered a 3-1 loss to the LA Dodgers on April 12th. The D-backs opened with a 1-0 lead but an unusual call in the second inning tied up the game, and Arizona never regained momentum.

Despite Dan Haren’s 0-2 record, he’s pitched 13 innings allowing just 3 runs in the two games he started this season.

“I pride myself on being consistent, going out there every time and giving my team a chance,” Haren said. “I’ve done that, but I haven’t gotten W’s, but I’m where I need to be pitching-wise. You can’t really measure a pitcher by wins and losses anyway. You know, there’s only so much I can control.”

Manny Rodriquez hit a double and James Loney got to second on a fielding error by Chris Young. Martin Russell struck out leaving two on base heading into the bottom of the first inning.

Felix Lopez doubles for Arizona and scores the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Stephen Drew to center fielder Juan Peirre.

At the top of the second, Andre Ethier scores on a double play that put out Randy Wolf and Pierre. Ethier scored on a controversial and scarcely used “fourth out rule.”

According to Wikipedia.com, the fourth “is a legal out made by the defense after three outs in a half-inning have already been recorded. According to the rules, the third out does not cause the ball to become dead; if the fielders make a subsequent out that prevents a run from scoring, this will supersede the apparent third out.”

The controversy happened in Sunday’s game when Ethier failed to tap up before the runner at second was tagged out.

Because no one made a play at third before leaving the field, the ball was still considered live and Ethier’s run was counted.

Had Arizona tagged third, this would not have been the case.

“It was kind of shocking,” Ethier said. “Joe says to run everything out and keep playing, and it paid off. It was like Little League, the last runner just keep running until they tag you out.”

Neither team had much of a showing until the top of the ninth when Matt Kemp smacked a double, sending Russel home for the final 3-1.

Dodgers starter Randy Wolf retired 16 consecutive batters and recorded five strikeouts.

The diamondbacks have lost two out of three games in their last two series at home.

“It seems like we either have a real good game offensively or a bad game,” Melvin said. “We’ve had a couple of decent games, and the rest of them, we haven’t done much offensively at all.”

“Our at-bats weren’t great throughout the game,” D-backs manager Bob Melvin said. “At times, he was fairly predictable but kept the ball at the corners. As the game went along it seemed like his feel got better and better.”
