Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia has 19 sports. Those teams have won 37 championships at the national level. They have won 130 conference championships.
The Bulldogs got their name more than a century ago. The ‘Bulldog’ was chosen because of their ferocity.
Sanford Stadium at Georgia holds roughly 93,000 people. Georgia’s most historic rivalry can be traced back to 1892. The Auburn Tigers have played many close games with Georgia.
Georgia Tech and Florida are Georgia’s other chief rivals. Really, all of the SEC East teams are big rivals of Georgia. These conference and division games feature two tough teams who both want to win. Georgia Tech and Georgia are in-state rivals that compete in just about everything.
During the 1980s, Georgia competed with Clemson. That was a big rivalry during that time. The teams have been playing yearly because they are in the same division.
The football team has had recent success.
Georgia’s football game with Florida is deemed by many Bulldogs fans as a favoring of Florida. This game is not a home-home series like most all of college football’s games. This game is played on a neutral site in Jacksonville, FL. It doesn’t seem fair to Bulldogs fans because Jacksonville is only 73 miles away from Gainesville, FL, but a whopping 342 miles from Athens, GA. Georgia has the edge in this series. Florida somewhat closed the gap in the past two decades. Georgia recognizes the series record as 47-38-2. This includes the football game in 1904 before Florida sanctioned their football program. However, Georgia counts that game because it’s a game that was actually played between the two teams. Recently, the two teams have almost split the last 5 games. Florida won in 2005, ‘06, and ‘08. Georgia won in 2004 and ’07. From 1990 and 2003, Florida went 15-1. This somewhat closed the gap but Georgia still holds about a 10 game edge between the two schools.

LSU in Control at College World Series

LSU has lost 16 games all season and is ranked number 1. They proved that they belonged in the College World Series after beating SEC rival Arkansas in College World Series’s second round. LSU’s Blake Dean (DH), Austin Nola (SS), and Mikie Mahtook (CF) hit homeruns Monday at Rosenblatt Stadium.
The 9-1 victory for LSU was aided by the good pitching performance of starter Louis Coleman. They now have a 12 game winning streak. They will resume play Friday afternoon against whoever wins Virginia and Arkansas. Virginia won and lost 9 more games than Arkansas during the regular season. However, in the World Series, that is irrelevant. Whichever team the Tigers play, they will have to be ready because there have been many upsets in the tournament so far. The game Friday will be broadcast on LSU’s Sports Radio Network and ESPN2.
Coleman pitched six innings. He allowed one run while giving up six hits. He walked three batters and struck out seven batters.
Jared Mitchell, a rightfielder, and DJ LeMahieu, a second baseman, each had three hits. On Monday, LeMahieu became the only player in the history of LSU baseball that has back-to-back three-hit games while playing in the World Series.
The Tigers had a 3-0 lead during the first inning. LeMahieu singled and stole second. Schimpf was walked. Mikie Mahtook hit a three-run home run which gave them a lead they would not look back on.
Mahtook was the first LSU freshman since 2000 to hit a homerun in the World Series in college baseball.
The Razorbacks as expected came back in the bottom of the inning and scored a run. That was all the Razorbacks would score.
Nolan Cain ended the game pitching for LSU. He allowed only one hit while striking out two batters.
LSU will take on the winner of the Arkansas-Virginia game Friday.

Florida Gators

The Florida Gators belong to what is called the “Gator Nation.”
Many of the Gators sports teams are located along Stadium Road. The Gators have had the best overall sports record in the SEC for the past 20 years. The men’s and women’s sports teams combined have won the SEC All-Sports Trophy 19 times out of the last 22 years.
The Gators made national news a few years ago by winning 2 championships in basketball in back-to-back years. Also, in that year’s span, they won a championship in football. They beat Ohio State 41-14 and Oklahoma 24-14 for their last 2 football national championships.
Florida’s biggest rivals in sporting events are Georgia, Florida State, and Tennessee. Some Gator fans actually want to play Auburn and Miami because they have had major rivalries with both of those teams in the past.
The football team at Florida was fielded in 1906. The Gators have played in 36 football bowl games. Florida’s schedule in football is always tough. They play Eastern SEC rivals like Tennessee and Georgia. Florida has a good record against these teams. Also, Florida typically begins conference play with Tennessee. Florida plays Georgia yearly but on a neutral site. Urban Meyer has one of the highest winning percentages of football teams in the past few years.
The baseball team at Florida saw their best days during the 2005 season. They won the SEC title that year and got a place at the College World Series. That was the fifth time in their history they have done that.
The basketball team had little success before the 1990s. The Gators basketball team was ranked number 1 in the preseason polls before the 2006-07 season. They lived up to expectations, winning it all against Ohio State. They won back-to-back championships using the same line-up both times.

Texas Has Big Comeback Versus Arizona State

Cameron Rupp, the Longhorns catcher, started and ended the comeback versus Arizona State. Cameron untied the game by leading off the seventh inning with a home run. That 7th run would later be all that Texas needed. Taylor Jungmann pitched 5 2/3 innings without giving up any runs. The 10-6 win over ASU allows Texas to play Friday against whoever wins between Arizona State and North Carolina.

Kevin Keyes’s RBI double and Brandon Loy’s two-run single gave their team three runs in the eighth inning to complete the comeback. The Longhorns were trailing by six runs early in the game.

Arizona State was in control of things after only the first three innings. They scored 6 runs, with 3 coming in each the 2nd and 3rd innings. The Sun Devils appeared to be running away with the game. The Longhorns battled back like everybody knew they would. The Sun Devil’s lead of 6 runs had evaporated when they came back up to bat.
Keyes had a single. Leake got hit by a pitch. Rupp hit a powerful homerun. Preston Clark and also Connor Rowe each singled. This is just a snippet of part of the Longhorns comeback.
The Longhorns was able to get out of a jam when the score was tied at 6. There were two people on base for Arizona in the 6th inning and didn’t give up any more runs. Since Texas didn’t give up any more runs, it allowed Rupp’s homerun to put the Longhorns up by 1 run.
Rupp and Jungmann were the MVPs of this game. Rupp walked twice, had two home runs, and had four RBIs. Jungmann allowed two hits. He also struck out six batters. Other people contributed to the Longhorns comeback. This will surely go into the Longhorn’s fans most memorable games of all-time.

Arkansas Razorbacks

Bobby Petrino can look forward to his second season as the Arkansas Razorbacks coach after a superb last-gasp victory over the then defending national champions LSU and a disappointing but expected 5-7 record in what was always going to be a season of many changes following Houston Nutt’s departure after 10 seasons in charge of the Hogs. With no conference championships in 20 years and a relatively poor 2-5 Bowl record under Nutt, Petrino has a lot of work to do to turn the team’s fortunes around especially with Georgia, Auburn and Florida matches packing a tough first half of the upcoming season.

Duke Bluedevils

Duke University is private research university at Durham, North Carolina with the football team called Duke Blue Devil. The home stadium is Wallace Wade Stadium. The team has so far won one national title and 17 conference titles. However in recent years the team has not been doing well and was last in ACC- Coastal standings in 2008 with a conference tally of 1-7 and overall tally of 4-8. Duke Blue Devil store has a magnificent collection of gears, gifts and apparels to appeal everyone. The head coach David Cutcliffe is in his second year and has a challenge cut out for him. He seeks a better performance in 2009. With both quarter backs starter Thaddeus Lewis and backup Sean Renfree, the offense is better; Defensive tackle Vince Oghobaase is back after recovery from an injury ; Wide receiver Donovan Varner with Johnny Lewis will be a young pair to watch. Beside these RB Re’quan Boyette who missed 2008 season after a knee injury is back. Will Duke Blue Devil do better in 2009? Yes, if one takes in account that they won four games last season which is the combined total of the games they won in last four years.

Mississippi State Bulldogs

Mississippi State University’s team is called Bulldogs and they are the last in 2008 standing with tally of 2-6 in the conference and overall tally of 4-8. Based in Starkville, Mississippi they have Bully as their mascot. Mississippi State University’s Bulldogs use Davis Wade Stadium for football, Humphrey Coliseum for basketball and Dudy Noble Field for baseball. Mississippi State University’s Bulldogs have an SEC record of 486-527-39 with win percent of 0.481. Mississippi state Bulldogs permanent opponents from SEC East are Kentucky Wildcats with series record of 16-20. MSU Bulldogs stores are an exciting place to shop for gears and gift. After 2008 season head coach Sylvester Croom resigned, Dan Mullen, offensive coordinator of University of Florida was made the new head coach. The new coach has to turn this team around. There is talent but his offensive side is weak. Tyler Russell the high school football hero last year has joined the team. This is going to be a testing season for the coach in a division where you have Alabama and Mississippi

Tennessee Vols

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee is known as Tennessee Volunteers. They were fifth in the SEC East Standing in 2008 with conference tally of 3-5 and an overall tally of 5-7. The home stadium is called Neyland Stadium. The team with a glorious past has won 6 national titles (last in 1998) ,16 conference titles and 7 divisional title ( last in 2007) ; their postseason bowl record is 25-22-0 and all times record of 773-327-55. Lane Kiffin is the new head coach after Phillip Fulmer resigned after 17 years at the end of 2008 season with a record of 152-52. Tennessee Volunteers store is place to find existing gear, apparels and gifts for the fans. The new coach will have to consolidate the team so that it can aim for SEC East in 2010 or 2011. Barring some unexpected offensive play at the quarterback position the team will find it difficult to improve their seven win status of 2008 season. The games to watch will be Tennessee at Florida on September 19th; it is not that Tennessee is expected to win, but the game has aroused considerable interest as the Vols coach, Lane Kiffin had accuse Gator coach Urban Meyer of cheating in February this year. The other important will be Auburn at Tennessee on October 3rd

Arizona State

Arizona State University’s team Arizona Sun Devils is based in Tempe, Arizona. The home ground is Sun Devil Stadium at Frank Kush Field. Arizona Sun Devils is seventh in Pac-10 ranking ahead of UCLA, Washington State University and University of Washington. With a conference tally of 4-5 and overall tally of 5-7 in 2008, it lost the sixth place to Stanford whose tally is the same on points. Arizona State Sun Devils stores have wide range of gears and gifts for everyone. Arizona start their 2009 season on September 5th with their first game against Idaho State. Danny Sullivan, the quarter back has to prove himself this season after a 5-7 season last year, as ASU defense is aggressive and physical. The young defense of Arizona Sun Devil is easy to spot and ready to hit but it is the offense which has many holes and hence make any prediction difficult. The team is not in 25 Top teams nationally but they have the potential to be.
